Smudging

Smudge makes you conscious of what you are doing. It wakes you up. As the great teacher Jesus said “Awake, awake, awake whilst you are in this body, for everything is within it”

When I smudge myself and a hide that I am cutting for drums. Smudge smoke awakens me to what I am doing and how I am doing it. The smoke tells me about the depth of experience I have the possibility to attain. The smoke smell hits my olfactory nerve and directly connects to my primitive brain in the occiput at the back of the head, and tells me, “This deer was alive last year, eating grass in a meadow, feeding her young, enjoying life” I awaken to knowing that she was a she, and she had a family like me.

Smudge takes me to a place of respect. When I smudge another person its the same but now there are two of us who can see and feel and go deeper. We become more respectful to each other as we clear away the dross and dust that is lingering in the memory and self judgement. All this superficial information can be cleared away with the sweet smoke.
