Group Sound Arts Therapy Training (Professional Diploma)
This course is perfect for anyone wanting to work with sound-arts for health and wellbeing. During the course we will be learning how to create a range of different sessions using the sound as a therapeutic and creative art-form. We will explore improvisation, sonic-art, soundscapes, drum circles and community music making. We will also look at how to create a wealth of different sessions from simple music making to notation, story-telling and spectacular performances! This course is particularly beneficial for people working in (or wanting to work in) the following areas:

Day 1 – Sound as a Therapeutic Art-Form

Taking the threads through from Fundamental we will expand on using sound and music as a therapeutic art-form, looking at Himalayan singing bowls, gongs, chimes, percussion, crystal bowls and drum. Different playing techniques will be explored and the psychology of sound discussed.

Day 2 – ‘Songlines’ – Soundscapes and Sonic-art

This day is a sonic adventure into soundscapes and sonic art. We will look at literal and metaphorical soundscapes, creating art with sound and story-telling. A range of different therapeutic applications will be discussed along with the psychology of improvisation and creativity.

Day 3 – Rhythm, Percussion and Movement

This day is all about rhythm and percussion. We will explore
the drum, chimes and various percussion instruments as well
as body percussion and movement. Drum circle facilitation, expression with the drum and rhythm games building a comprehensive picture of how to improve health with drum and rhythm.

Day 4 – Creating Sonic Extravaganzas!

Today we will look at putting performance pieces together and the therapeutic application and benefits of performance and the different sessions we will be running. We will also discuss the community projects and case study sessions.

Community Project

This course requires you to take part in a community project. Together we will work on our chosen project coordinated and supported by Nicola Kelly, a BAST graduate Mentor with 20 years experience in Community Work specialising in the Arts for Health and Wellbeing. There will be webinars, meetings and templates to support you on the Learning Zone. BAST will collate the final audio files, visuals and data that you’ve gathered individually and create a final project presentation to benefit all.
