I am, where I’m meant to be

“We did not come into this world. We came out of it, like buds out of branches and butterflies out of cocoons. We are a natural product of this Earth, and if we turn out to be intelligent beings, then it can only be because we are the product of an intelligent Earth, which is nourished in turn by an intelligent system of energy”

Lyall Watson, Gifts of Unknown Things

Fortunately I live fifty yards from a beautiful river called the Glan, which flows south from the foot hills of the Alps into the Drau and onto the ocean. Her banks are fortified with Willow, Ash, Poplar and Alder and in the swampy areas there are beavers taking down and carving good sized trees. This is my daily morning walk up a path to a disused bridge where I open the medicine wheel, do tai Qi and the golden light exercise routine. My vocal chords are moistened by her mist, I sing myself awake with Arti, and the Gaitri, and more recently with this song to the river.

The River has an aura, the dampness fills the air swirling out from her containment, feeding the great trees and plants along the bank. I cannot avoid being immersed in her influence, breathing, watching and listening to the life she is and that she supports. As a man born in cancer and a water diviner my at-tunement to her is very acute, we talk and sing together and this song is her serpentine conversation with me about alone-ness, she comes in, in brackets.

River Glan you

Are flowing through me

I am walking by your side

Living waters, flowing water

Let me flow with you.

I stand alone, I breathe alone (I am where I am meant to be).

The standing people, they stand alone (inside of me)

Within her earth and below his sky (where they are meant to be)

A stone person (as solid as rock)

Is set alone (cannot move unless shifted)

In the place of his own (looks out from where he is)

Of her Earth (she loves her stone people)

Shone on by his Sky (he loves to warm them)

You flow alone (waiting to teach)

River runs to her sea (down, down draining)

Slithering down inside of me (I am intelligence)

I stand alone, I stand alone (an upright stream)

A slow walk home (step by step, ripple by ripple)

Turn to find (there is nothing there)

Where I am meant to be

People beside me and behind (surrounded by rivers)

People in front (all around but not inside)

I stand alone, I have to find (it’s not easy, it’s not a joke)

No one can do it for me,

I stand alone, where I’m meant to be.

I am, where I’m meant to be
